Spring and Autumn Dialogue Series for new and expectant international parents at Utrecht University

In the Spring 2026 series, consisting of 3 bi-weekly guided sessions, we discuss topics relevant to becoming a new parent during an academic career. In the Fall 2026 series, we offer a small-scale dialogue series for international first-time parents who have returned to work (children aged 3-36 months).

We focus on the earliest phase (pregnancy and the neonatal period) of the first 1000 days, a crucial period in your child’s development as well as in your own parenting journey.

Why

Growing older while navigating the demands of an academic career can be both enriching and overwhelming. The pressures to perform, publish and grow professionally often parallel physical changes, new responsibilities and shifting personal priorities. For international staff, these challenges can be compounded by a lack of familiarity with policies and support options, relevant healthcare and social systems, and cultural differences in expectations around pregnancy and parenthood.

This series is designed to provide international parents with a safe, non-judgmental space where they can:

  • Be able to gather information relevant to the earliest stages of parenthood
  • Be able to meet and connect with other international colleagues at a similar stage of life
  • Be able to connect with themselves in their new role as a (prospective) parent
  • Be able to reflect on challenges and aspirations as new and/or expectant parents in a foreign country

For whom

The dialogue series is intended for international academic and professional staff of Utrecht University who are pregnant or expecting a child. PhD students are also welcome.

Fathers and LGBTQIA+ parents are strongly encouraged to participate. Parents with young babies are welcome if they are interested in the themes of the program.
